C’EST LA VIE, SUMMER.

Not officially, of course. Kansas City is still under an Extreme Heat Warning and headed toward 101°F. But September has already started changing the city’s vocabulary. Keep Tuesday compact: KCK lunch, indoor culture, a 6:40 first pitch and a short way home.

By 8 p.m., the warning should lift. By Wednesday, relief and thunderstorms enter the picture. Until then, the useful city is the one built from shade, doors and distance.

01 · WEATHER

Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 101°F and heat index values approaching 110. The Extreme Heat Warning for the central metro remains in effect through 8 p.m. Tuesday. Drink before you are thirsty, move outdoor errands into the morning, and do not leave people or pets in a parked car.

Wednesday turns cooler—near 89°F—but more humid, with thunderstorms capable of heavy rain and ponding. The better plan is heat discipline today and a rain-aware commute tomorrow.

02 · OVERNIGHT

Downtown Kansas City was already around 81°F under mostly clear skies before sunrise. There was no real overnight reset, only a dimmer version of the heat.

Sunrise is about 6:53 a.m.; sunset lands around 7:38 p.m. The daylight is shortening even while the temperature keeps arguing for August.

03 · ROADS / TRANSIT / AIRPORT

The evening drive has the sharpest changes. From 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday, MoDOT is closing several I-49 frontage-road and ramp connections around MO-150, 140th Street, Main Street and Blue Ridge Boulevard. Read the ramp before committing to it.

Daytime flagging also starts on Route 131 and Route OO in Lafayette County, Route T in Pettis County, and MO 92 at the Centennial Bridge and MO 45 in Platte County. Work windows generally run between 7 or 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

RideKC’s planned September service reductions were canceled, but five route alerts remain active, including Troost MAX at US 71/Bannister and Route 107 at 47th and Rainbow. For the airport, confirm the individual flight on FlyKC before leaving.

04 · SPORTS

The Arizona Diamondbacks meet the Royals at 6:40 p.m. at Kauffman Stadium. Tuesday is Jewish Heritage Night. Build the route around first pitch and the I-49 evening work; there is no Chiefs game today.

05 · LUNCH

Kansas City, Kansas’ first Black Restaurant Week runs September 7–13, with select $9.13 specials leading into 913 Day. Four lunch doors: John’s Java & Jazz, Holy Smoke BBQ, Wilson’s Pizza & Grill and Jones Bar-B-Q.

The offer varies by participant, so confirm the day’s special before crossing town. The better use of the week is discovery: choose the restaurant that fits the rest of your route, then remember it after the promotion ends.

06 · FREE / LOW-COST

1. Linda Hall Library: Alchemy of Knowledge—science, mystery and the long line from Shakespeare to AI. The library reopens Tuesday at 10 a.m.; public programming is free.

2. Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art: Sport and Spectator, free and open to the public.

3. Beer Kitchen: Tuesday Music Bingo, listed by Visit KC among today’s free events.

4. City Hall: Finance, Governance and Public Safety meets at 10:30 a.m.; Neighborhood Planning and Development follows at 1:30 p.m., with public access and Zoom information on the city calendar.

07 · NEIGHBORHOODS

In KCK, Black Restaurant Week turns the 913 area code into a citywide dining route. In Platte County, MO 92 flagging changes a familiar east-west path. Near 47th and Rainbow, Route 107 stays on detour through September 21. These are small changes until they land directly in your day.

The neighborhood move is simple: pick one side of the state line, cluster the stops and leave the long diagonal trip for cooler weather.

08 · ARTS & CULTURE

Disney’s Newsies opens tonight at Starlight Theatre and runs through Sunday. KC Rep’s Come From Away is also on the calendar. Screenland Armour has The Muppet Movie in 4K restoration, while Tuesday’s music options include live jazz and the Second Tuesday Jam Session.

If heat has flattened the appetite for a big night, Linda Hall’s exhibition or the Nerman Museum can hold the cultural part of the day indoors.

09 · CITY HOROSCOPE

Aries: shorten the route. Taurus: choose the lunch counter with the coldest room. Gemini: read the detour twice. Cancer: protect the quiet hour. Leo: save your entrance for after sunset. Virgo: confirm the special before ordering. Libra: let one good event be enough. Scorpio: carry water without making it a personality. Sagittarius: roam one neighborhood, not the whole metro.
