Overnight storms finally broke the dry spell, but they also left more than 34,000 customers reported without power Sunday night, downed trees and lines, hail and damage at festival grounds. Labor Day itself turns hot again: mostly sunny near 95°F, with a heat index around 100. Tuesday makes one more hard run near 99 before storm chances rise Tuesday night and Wednesday. Thursday finally settles near 83.

Labor Day will be mostly sunny with a high near 95°F and heat-index values around 100. Tonight stays warm near 76. Tuesday reaches near 99 with heat-index values around 105. The next meaningful rain chance arrives Tuesday night into Wednesday; Thursday brings the real temperature break.

OVERNIGHT

More than 34,000 customers were reported without power Sunday night. Bonner Springs saw quarter-size hail; Leavenworth reported downed trees; Raymore reported downed lines. A structure at 115 NW Harlem Road lost a roof covering, but occupants were safe. Treat every downed line as live.

ROADS / TRANSIT / AIRPORT

KCATA buses run a Sunday/holiday schedule. Unified Government Transit in KCK and Johnson County transit do not operate today. KC Streetcar runs normal service and remains fare-free. Check MoDOT’s traveler map for debris or closures and FlyKC or your airline before heading to the airport.

The Royals host the Arizona Diamondbacks at 1:10 p.m. CDT at Kauffman Stadium. There is no Chiefs game today.
