Weather: At 3:54 p.m., Kansas City Downtown Airport was 97°F under fair skies, with a 102°F heat index, southwest wind at 5 mph gusting to 22 and 10-mile visibility. Tonight stays clear near 78°F. The National Weather Service upgraded the advisory to an Extreme Heat Warning through 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Overnight: Tonight stays clear near 78°F. The night remains warm enough that late movement still needs water and a shorter route home.

Roads, transit and airport: Two southbound I-435 lanes at Gregory Boulevard close from 7 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday. I-29 paving continues through September 14, while Route 107 and Troost MAX remain on construction detours. Check the route before crossing the metro.

Sports: Miami visits Kansas City at 6:40 p.m. Sandy Alcantara faces Michael Wacha at Kauffman Stadium, and both lineups are posted; Carter Jensen leads off for Kansas City.

Lunch: The indoor-counter rule still works after five: water first, one shaded errand, one route home. This is not an evening to make the city harder than it already is.
