By early afternoon, the dark seams left by Thursday’s rain are fading from the pavement. Kansas City is bright again, hot enough to turn a short parking-lot walk into a decision. The useful part of Friday now depends on sequence: finish the outdoor errand, eat before the specials disappear, check radar after three and leave early for the stadium corridor.
Step Outside KC
Sun first. A storm may interrupt the handoff to evening.
The National Weather Service forecast called for a high near 91 degrees, with heat-index values near 98 and a 30 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms mainly after 3 p.m. A slight storm chance lingered before 8 p.m., followed by mostly clear skies, southwest wind gusts near 18 mph and a low around 75.
Shade is part of the route. Do not let blue sky settle the forecast.
Last Night + Today
Kansas City is already arguing about what comes next.
The Chiefs’ planned Olathe headquarters and training complex continued moving forward with a new partner attached to the roughly $300 million project. The region’s sports geography keeps shifting west.
A family-owned diner announced that rising rent was forcing its closure, adding another local example to the larger Friday conversation about what small businesses can absorb as property costs climb.
On the East Side, a nonprofit continued work intended to move residents from renting into attainable homeownership while keeping investment connected to the neighborhood.
KC2026 reported more than 400,000 Fan Festival visits, 413,169 match attendees and more than 215,000 ConnectKC riders. The temporary city is coming down; the numbers remain.
Roads, Ramps & Wrecks
Tonight’s problem is not one closure. It is two crowds arriving together.
Northbound U.S. 69 traffic between West 61st and West 56th remained shifted into southbound lanes, with no access from Metcalf to Martway or 58th in the work zone.
The southbound I-35 exit to Gardner Road and the Gardner Road entrance to northbound I-35 remained closed for bridge work through December 15.
The Kansas City Current started at 7 p.m. and the Royals at 7:10. The useful plan was simple: buy parking, check radar and leave enough room for the final mile.
From the Stands
Kansas City Current hosted first-place San Diego Wave at 7 p.m. at CPKC Stadium on Kids Night Out, with Prime Video carrying the match.
The Royals opened a three-game series against San Diego at 7:10 p.m. at Kauffman Stadium, with Royals.TV and KCTV5 carrying Friday’s game.
Sporting Kansas City had erased a two-goal deficit at St. Louis the night before, then lost 3–2 on an 86th-minute penalty.

North Italia in Leawood offered a $25 Summer Match-Up prix fixe with choices including Italian Cobb Salad, meatball garlic-knot sliders and Tie-Dye Margherita Pizza.
The Melting Pot on the Plaza offered a three-course $33 Friday lunch with cheese, salad and chocolate fondue, with entrée add-ons available.
Beer Kitchen in Westport served Lobster Friday through sellout, including a brown-butter lobster roll or lobster macaroni and cheese.
Minsky’s and Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que brought back their local collaboration pizza for Friday.
KC Without a Cover
Free plans arranged themselves by the hour they became useful: Kaleidoscope family art sessions at Crown Center during the hottest part of the afternoon; Third Friday in Downtown Overland Park from 5 to 8 p.m.; the Nelson-Atkins Book Social from 6 to 8 p.m.; and the Third Friday Art Walk in Downtown Kansas City, Kansas, from 5 to 9 p.m.
