The World Cup footprint begins to shrink. Monday arrives sunny, warm and ordinary enough to require a fresh look at the route, the lunch plan and the evening ahead.

Before the sun clears the rooftops, the city is already putting things back where they belong. Forklifts move across the old Fan Fest grounds. Bus schedules lose their tournament padding. The giant red heart stays, but the temporary city around it begins to disappear.
Step Outside KC
Cool enough now. Hot enough later.
At 5:54 a.m., downtown Kansas City was fair and 72 degrees with 82 percent humidity and calm wind. The National Weather Service expects full sun, a high near 90 and an east breeze of 5 to 8 mph this afternoon. Tonight clears out near 69.
Use the morning for the walk, the errand or the outdoor job. By midafternoon, shade matters more than optimism. Keep water in the car and do not leave children, pets or groceries sitting in it.
Overnight News
The Fan Fest grounds are becoming lawn again.
Crews were already moving trucks, carts and forklifts across the National WWI Museum and Memorial grounds Sunday morning. Kansas City’s official Fan Festival ran from June 11 through July 11; teardown is now part of the skyline below Liberty Memorial.
The heart is staying.
Mayor Quinton Lucas confirmed that the large red heart installed at Fan Fest will remain in Kansas City after the tournament.
A KCK utility worker died while serving the community.
The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities announced Sunday night that a lineworker died while working. The utility had not released the worker’s name or circumstances by the morning update.
The bus conversation did not end with the tournament.
World Cup-boosted service is returning to normal frequency and hours. KCATA has also warned that seven additional routes could be suspended without new funding.
Traffic + Road Issues
Fan Fest bus reroutes: RideKC’s temporary reroutes for routes 27, 85 and 201 were scheduled through July 13. Check the live alert before leaving.
14th and Holmes: Bridge construction continues to reroute the Troost MAX, 23-23rd Street and 29 Blue Ridge Limited through August.
U.S. 71 at Bannister: The Troost MAX remains on detour through September 15. Routes 18 Indiana and 27 27th Street remain affected by I-70 construction detours.

Jac Caglianone gets the long-ball stage tonight.
The Royals slugger competes in the Home Run Derby at 7 p.m. Central in Philadelphia. It is his first Derby appearance.
Baltimore completed a three-game sweep with an 8–2 win Sunday. KC Current host San Diego Wave FC Friday at 7 p.m.; Sporting Kansas City resumes league play Thursday against St. Louis CITY SC.

Today is not asking for reinvention. It is asking for the calendar to be checked, the route to be confirmed and one neglected corner to be put back in order.

Mildred’s Crossroads is open 7 a.m.–4 p.m. Mildred’s on Baltimore and Mildred’s on Main are open 7 a.m.–3 p.m. Town Topic’s Broadway location lists 24-hour service.
KC Without a Cover
The Nelson-Atkins is open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. with free general admission. The Yvonne Starks Wilson Park ribbon cutting runs noon–1 p.m. Central Library screens Far and Away at 2 p.m. Plaza Branch hosts chess from 6–7 p.m.

Closing Line
The temporary signs will come down one by one. The heat will stay. The buses will keep asking for funding. The diner grill will keep turning. Kansas City does not return to normal all at once.
