A LIGHT LAYER THIS MORNING. SUN THIS AFTERNOON.

WEDNESDAY · SEPTEMBER 23, 2026 · 7:29 A.M. CDT REFRESH

Kansas City starts the first full Wednesday of fall under low clouds and cool air, then turns bright. Village West ramps reopen for race week, one Northland ramp closes from 9 to 3, the Royals start at 6:40, Pendleton Heights meets at five, and Modest Mouse is on at eight.

At 7:29, the clouds are still sitting low over Kansas City. The air is cool enough for a light layer. By afternoon, the gray breaks and the temperature stops near 74. The useful changes are on the road map: Village West is open for race week, while one Northland ramp closes for six hours. After that, the day becomes a set of exact clocks.

1) STEP OUTSIDE KC

A light layer now. Sun later.

At the 7:29 a.m. refresh, Kansas City is around 63°F under mostly cloudy skies. The cloud deck gives way to bright afternoon sunshine with a high near 74°F. Tonight turns mostly clear with a low around 56°F.

2) LAST NIGHT IN THE METRO

One Crossroads dining room is counting its final services.

Anton’s at 1610 Main says it will close after 14 years, with its last meal Friday. Owner Anton Kotar cited a steep post-pandemic revenue decline, higher operating costs and health issues. Separately, the Housing Gateway effort is being organized to coordinate metro homelessness services and aims to house 600 people in its first year.

3) ROADS, RAMPS & WRECKS

Village West opens; one Northland ramp closes for six hours.

Village West Parkway and the I-70 entrance and exit ramps at North 110th Street reopen today through September 28 for Kansas Speedway traffic. In the Northland, the northbound I-35 ramp to MO-269 closes from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. today for lighting repair. MoDOT’s planned Route H closure at Taulbee Road in Weston has been postponed and should not be treated as an active closure.

4) FROM THE STANDS

The Royals get another night at Kauffman after a 25-run opener.

Chicago beat Kansas City 14–11 Tuesday. Game two starts at 6:40 p.m. with Erick Fedde and Seth Lugo listed as the probable starters. It is the season’s final Bark at the Park. Parking gates open at 3:45 p.m., gates A and E at 5, and the remaining stadium gates at 5:30.

5) KC LUNCH LINE

Four Wednesday reasons to leave the desk.

Minsky’s: $8 Angus cheeseburger and fries all day. Harpo’s in Westport: $9.95 classic cheeseburger and fries all day. Westport Flea Market: chicken-fried steak all day. Brick House in Union Hill: $8 Buffalo or chipotle chicken sandwich with a side for Whiskey & Wine Wednesday.

6) KC WITHOUT A COVER

Markets, rare books and chamber music carry the free plan.

Downtown Lee’s Summit Farmers Market runs 8 a.m.–noon at 209 SE Green Street. Linda Hall Library’s Alchemy of Knowledge is free today. Grandview Farmers Market is also on the Wednesday calendar. Kansas City Symphony musicians play a free Mobile Music Box concert at Wallace Park in Belton at 6 p.m., weather permitting.

7) AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOODS

Pendleton Heights puts two hours into a pocket park.

The neighborhood association meets at Lexington and Brooklyn from 5–7 p.m. for Pocket Park weeding and cleanup. It is small, specific work: soil, weeds, corners, the pieces of a neighborhood that have to be handled by hand.

8) ARTS & CULTURE

Abstraction, spoken word, then an outdoor rock show.

VISUAL VOICE: Moments of Abstraction is on view at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center, which hosts Spoken Word Poetry Live with Akilah Cherry from 6–8 p.m. At Grinders, Modest Mouse with Robber Robber has doors at 7 p.m. and showtime at 8.

9) A GRAIN OF RICE

Use the clear day for one practical move.

Aries: begin before the day crowds you. Taurus: choose the meal worth leaving the desk for. Gemini: check the route once. Cancer: keep the plan neighborhood-sized. Leo: give the evening a room with music. Virgo: finish the detail that has been following you. Libra: let the season change without turning it into a project. Scorpio: notice the storefront with a new name. Sagittarius: take the longer walk. Capricorn: complete the ordinary thing properly. Aquarius: show up where people are doing the work. Pisces: keep one hour open after dark.

10) MOON NOTE

The waxing gibbous moon waits until late afternoon.

Moonrise is about 5:48 p.m. in Kansas City, with roughly 93 percent illumination at lunar noon. The moon reaches the meridian around 11:16 p.m.; the full moon arrives Saturday, September 26 at 11:49 a.m.

11) EDITORIAL DISCOVERY

A restaurant closing and a neighborhood bar opening belong in the same notebook.

Anton’s is leaving the Crossroads after 14 years while O’B’s opens in Waldo with an intentionally simple neighborhood-bar model. The reporting question is what fixed costs, foot traffic, labor and neighborhood identity now require from an independent Kansas City dining room.

12) TOP FIVE

Five clocks worth keeping Wednesday.

8 a.m. Lee’s Summit Farmers Market. 9 a.m. northbound I-35 ramp to MO-269 closes. 5 p.m. Pendleton Heights cleanup. 6:40 p.m. White Sox–Royals. 8 p.m. Modest Mouse at Grinders.

13) SOURCE LIST

The 7:29 a.m. refresh is built from direct schedules, official road notices and current local reporting.

Every section above was checked against a primary schedule, official agency page, direct business page or current local report before this refresh was published.

By evening, the Bond Bridge will have traded morning gray for clean September light, traffic still moving beneath its cables.
