Evening Update — The City Turns Toward Light
At seven, the day game is over, the soccer crowd is arriving west, and Broadway is filling. The air is cooler than the July afternoons Kansas City has been carrying, and the first useful move is simple: walk now.

What Changed by Evening
SALVADOR PEREZ REACHED 317. His home run tied George Brett’s Royals franchise record, turning one swing into the day’s clearest Kansas City sports story.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY CAME HOME AT 7:30. The second crowd window followed the Royals’ afternoon game, moving evening traffic toward Children’s Mercy Park.
QUALITY HILL’S BUILDING ARGUMENT REMAINED OPEN. A proposed data center at 10th and Central keeps preservation, infrastructure, water, heat and neighborhood impact in the same public conversation.
Roads, Ramps & Wrecks — Evening
CHILDREN’S MERCY PARK — The 7:30 crowd window belongs to Sporting KC. Leave room for the post-work drive and stadium approaches.

Last Night in the Metro
QUALITY HILL’S NEXT ARGUMENT IS 384 FEET TALL. A proposed 20-story data center would replace the 1900 Western Newspaper Union building at 10th and Central. The City Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the plan August 5. Water, heat, noise, infrastructure and preservation are driving neighborhood concern.
THE CONSTRUCTION PAUSE IS OVER. Work held back during the World Cup has returned across the metro, including lane restrictions, water-main work and the long reconstruction of North Oak Trafficway.
THE ROYALS KEPT FINDING THE SMALL RUN. Kansas City entered the afternoon finale after a 3–2 Tuesday win over San Francisco.
Roads, Ramps & Wrecks — Daytime
I-435 / 87TH STREET — The ramp from southbound I-435 to 87th Street was scheduled to close from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for lighting work. North Oak west-side lane closures continued, while U.S. 69 traffic shifts and Gardner Road ramp work affected Johnson County.
From the Stands
The Royals’ 1:10 p.m. finale created the first crowd window. Sporting Kansas City’s 7:30 p.m. home match created the second. By evening, Salvador Perez’s 317th home run had tied George Brett’s franchise record.
KC Lunch Line
Minsky’s offered its weekday slice, salad and drink special and a Wednesday cheeseburger-and-fries deal. Beer Kitchen listed Smash’d Wednesday. Danny’s Bar & Grill listed a meatloaf lunch plate. Menus and availability can change; confirm before crossing town.

Downtown Lee’s Summit and Independence farmers markets, Moonlight Movies on the Square and the Wyandotte County Fair made up the day’s free or low-cost planning list.
The Deeper Read — What the City Keeps
A data center is usually described through capacity: power, cooling, speed and square footage. A historic building is described through what happened inside it. At 10th and Central, those two vocabularies occupy the same parcel.
The argument is not technology versus nostalgia. It is whether a city can modernize without treating every older wall as empty land.
WHY IT STILL MATTERS: Kansas City’s next era will be measured by what it builds, but also by what it refuses to erase before the public understands the trade.
Findings
The useful object is the paper map folded in the glove box. The phone knows the fastest route; the paper remembers that the road existed before the closure, the stadium, the development plan and the latest argument about what belongs downtown.
