Founded and edited by LaRee Durden, AVIA AREE began with a simple instinct: look closer.
A neighborhood is more than a list of businesses. A restaurant is more than a menu. A building is more than an address. Behind the places we pass every day are people taking risks, preserving history, building companies, making art, feeding neighborhoods, restoring old spaces and finding ways to make a life from what matters to them.
AVIA AREE covers Kansas City through food and coffee, independent businesses, architecture and history, neighborhoods, culture, wellness and natural living, travel, events, business and the people shaping what comes next.
It is also home to Talk About the Weather, AVIA AREE’s daily Kansas City edition—a reader-first briefing that moves through weather, news, roads, sports, lunch, things to do, neighborhoods, arts and details worth knowing that day.
The goal is to notice something worth noticing—and then tell the story well.
LaRee came to publishing after more than fifteen years in dentistry, including work in oral surgery and orthodontics. Her path into editorial work was not traditional, and that experience shapes the publication’s point of view.
She approaches stories with the curiosity of an outsider, the eye of a photographer, the persistence of a researcher and the practical understanding of someone who has spent years inside small businesses and professional organizations.
Her continuing studies in Creative Business Leadership and Digital Branding at SCAD brought together storytelling, visual identity, business, technology, culture and the ways people experience a place.
Today, she builds AVIA AREE from Kansas City while exploring how independent journalism, original photography, responsible AI-assisted research, digital publishing and thoughtful design can work together without losing the human observation at the center of every story.
AVIA AREE exists to document the people, places, ideas and everyday experiences that make Kansas City worth paying attention to.
Our mission is to create independent, useful and visually considered local journalism that helps readers understand not only what is happening, but where it came from, who is behind it and why it matters.
We document stories through original reporting, photography, interviews, research, firsthand observation and the responsible use of emerging technology.
We support independent businesses by taking their work seriously enough to tell the full story rather than reducing them to promotion. We preserve local history by connecting the Kansas City of today with the people, places and decisions that shaped it.
People living their purpose with passion—and finding a way to make it their profession.
The publication is independent by design. AVIA AREE values:
Reported features, essays and interviews carry the name of the writer or reporter responsible for the work. Additional reporting, photography, illustration and research credits are identified when they materially contribute to a piece. Short service updates and newsroom-compiled items may be credited to AVIA AREE Editorial. Paid partners and sponsors are never presented as authors of independent editorial coverage.
AI systems are tools, not authors: they do not receive bylines. Material AI assistance is disclosed when it is important to understanding how a story was produced. Corrections or credit questions may be sent to aviaareellc@gmail.com.
AVIA AREE combines heartfelt, place-centered journalism with AI-assisted workflows to make work possible that once required an entire newsroom.
Every story still begins with human curiosity. LaRee walks the neighborhoods, visits the businesses, photographs the places, conducts the interviews, notices the details and decides what deserves to be remembered. That firsthand reporting gives the publication its heart and point of view.
AI helps build the infrastructure around that work: organizing research, working through interviews, connecting historical context, monitoring developing stories, identifying gaps that require verification, managing publishing workflows, maintaining the daily edition and adapting reporting for the website, newsletter, archive and social platforms.
It allows one independent editor to work with greater consistency, depth and reach—but it does not replace reporting, relationships, judgment or accountability. Sources must still be verified. People must be represented fairly. Partnerships must be disclosed. Final editorial decisions remain human and remain LaRee’s.
These workflows are helping build what would not previously have been possible alone: a living digital magazine with the structure to become a lasting independent publication. The goal is to grow AVIA AREE into LaRee’s full-time work and eventually bring it into print, creating a physical record of Kansas City’s people, places, businesses, histories and everyday details.
