SHOW ME / THE FREE-ADMISSION EDIT / KANSAS CITY METRO

OCTOBER 4 + OCTOBER 9–11, 2026 / ALL TIMES CENTRAL

A good day in Kansas City does not have to begin with a ticket purchase. Sometimes it starts with a museum table, a kiln warming up, or a blanket unfolded on the grass. The pleasure is in paying attention: to what someone is making, to a piece of music, to the part of the metro you rarely give an afternoon.

This is the AVIA AREE edit: seven free-admission outings across two date windows. October 4 is its own Sunday. October 9–11 is the weekend ahead. Choose by date and neighborhood, not by how many stops you can fit in.

01 / Sunday, October 4

01 / Make a little room for art

Start indoors with Bach to Nature: an afternoon of leaf rubbings, collage and music-inspired art, with a related gallery activity.

11 a.m.–3 p.m.

Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, 4525 Oak Street, Kansas City, Missouri; Bloch Building lobby and Gallery 203.

Admission: free drop-in; no event registration required.

Know before you go: museum admission is free, but general visitors must check in online or on arrival. The Oak Street garage costs $20 per visit; parking is free for members, veterans, active military and guests with ADA placards. The north surface lot is temporarily closed, and some walkways and galleries are affected by maintenance. Check the museum’s access notices before leaving.

02 / Watch the kiln become the show

At Crane Yard Studios, the kiln becomes the afternoon’s main event. Come to watch pottery emerge from heat and smoke; making and firing your own piece is a separate paid activity.

2–6 p.m.

Belger Crane Yard Studios, 2011 Tracy Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri.

Admission: free to attend and watch; firing requires payment and advance registration.

03 / Let the evening swing

Take a blanket to the Grand Pavilion for an evening of Kansas City jazz. KCJO7 is the smaller ensemble of the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, performing as part of Lenexa’s outdoor concert series.

5–6:30 p.m.

Grand Pavilion, Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, 87th Street Parkway and Greenway Lane, Lenexa.

Admission: free.

04 / Choose a patch of grass

The Kansas City Symphony’s Mobile Music Box brings its musicians outdoors. This is another evening option; its start overlaps the Lenexa jazz concert, so choose the setting that suits you.

6 p.m.

Heritage Park, 16000 Pflumm Road, Olathe.

Admission: free; weather permitting. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.

02 / The weekend ahead: October 9–11

05 / An afternoon, made in Olathe

Put downtown Olathe on the calendar for regional artists, live entertainment and children’s activities. Festival admission and Kidtopia activities are free; activities are available while supplies last. Food, drinks and art purchases cost extra. Free public parking is available in the garage between West Park and West Loula streets.

Friday, October 9, 5–9 p.m.; Saturday, October 10, 11 a.m.–7 p.m.

Johnson County Square, 100 N. Kansas Avenue, Olathe.

Admission: free.

06 / Come back to the making table

Bach to Nature returns Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11, from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. The free drop-in art-making and gallery activity offer an indoor option for the weekend; no registration is required.

07 / A softer Sunday near the Plaza

On Sunday, October 11, the Mobile Music Box plays at 6 p.m. at Kirkwood Green Space, 4901 Central Street, Kansas City, Missouri, near the Plaza. The chamber concert is free and weather permitting. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and check the Symphony’s schedule for changes.

Before you go / The useful details

All times are Central. Free admission covers entry or the activity described; parking, transportation, food, purchases and optional participation may cost extra. Check the linked organizer page before leaving, especially for outdoor concerts.

Updated October 4, 2026: this guide covers October 4 and October 9–11. Events from October 2–3 are no longer listed as upcoming.

The city is yours. Take your time with it.
