THE MORNING IS SLIGHTLY COOLER. THE AIR IS STILL HOLDING ON.

Kansas City begins Wednesday near 79°F under mostly cloudy skies. The number is easier than yesterday morning; the air still feels thick, and the pavement has not forgotten the heat.

The afternoon reaches about 90°F under partly sunny, humid conditions. Use the cooler first hours for the longer walk, the farmers market and the errand that requires crossing a parking lot.

STEP OUTSIDE KC — WEATHER FINDINGS

NOW — Mostly cloudy near 79°F. The morning is a few degrees easier, but humidity keeps the air heavy.

TODAY — Partly sunny and humid, with a high near 90°F. Temperatures rise through the 80s before noon and peak in the early afternoon.

TONIGHT — Mostly clear and warm, with a low near 73°F.

LOOKING AHEAD — Thursday turns a little cooler near 85°F with a possible afternoon thunderstorm. Friday returns near 91°F with a spotty morning storm chance. Saturday is breezier and less hot near 84°F; Sunday looks mostly sunny near 85°F.

1. Kansas City is finalizing a bid to host matches in the 2031 Rugby World Cup. The Kansas City Sports Commission is working toward an August 31 deadline after the region hosted six FIFA World Cup matches.

The large closure to plan around is ahead: I-70 near downtown is scheduled to close in stages from Friday, July 31, through 5 AM Monday, August 3. Westbound ramps from I-435 begin closing at noon Friday; westbound I-70 closes at U.S. 40/31st Street at 1 PM; eastbound I-70 closes at 23rd Street at 8 PM.

For Wednesday travel, do not rely on an old closure screenshot. Check KC Scout, MoDOT and KDOT before departure, especially around I-70, I-435, Southwest Boulevard and the North Oak reconstruction area.
