UPDATED WEDNESDAY MORNING · AUGUST 19 · LIVE
KC WAKES UP UNDER WATER.
Overnight storms put the Kansas City metro under flash flood warnings through the morning commute. The storms have weakened, but runoff still matters: low crossings, underpasses, slick lanes and a city still drying out before another humid afternoon.
STEP OUTSIDE KC
Kansas City started Wednesday with the sound already over the roof. By early morning, storms that dropped two to four inches across parts of the metro had pushed south and weakened, but the water kept moving. The story is not just the radar now; it is the intersection, the underpass, the low street, the slow commute, and every route where the morning still has standing water.
WEATHER — NOW
MORNING — Cloudy near 69°F with flash-flood warnings in parts of the metro until 9:15 a.m. after overnight storms produced 2–4 inches of rain in the warned area.
WEATHER — TODAY
WEDNESDAY — Humid, high near 83°F. Times of clouds and sun with a thunderstorm in parts of the area; gusty winds can accompany downpours.
WEATHER — TONIGHT
TONIGHT — Cloudy to partly cloudy and muggy, low near 69°F; keep an eye on any renewed showers and leftover water on roads.
WORK WEEK / WEEKEND
THURSDAY — partly sunny and humid, high near 85°F. FRIDAY — hotter near 92°F. SATURDAY — humid, near 89°F, with a stray storm possible. SUNDAY — mostly cloudy with an afternoon thunderstorm possible, high near 84°F.
LAST NIGHT IN THE METRO
The Royals stadium funding agreement moved closer to a full Kansas City Council vote. The current proposal includes a 60% public share in $600 million from the city plus state contributions, with the Royals’ private share listed at $760 million. Public questions remain around city priorities, housing pressure, oversight, jobs and the scale of public participation.
ROADS, RAMPS & WRECKS
Start with water, not speed. The warned area includes urban roads, highways, underpasses, small creeks and poor-drainage or low-lying spots; drivers should not cross flooded roads. KC-area traffic updates were already active overnight, so check KC Scout or your live route before leaving. Leavenworth County also begins a 150th Street closure today for culvert replacement, weather permitting.
