Talk About The Weather — Tuesday, September 29, 2026
Kansas City starts Tuesday mostly cloudy and heads toward the low 80s before the weather turns wetter later today. Before then: Overland Park makes two consequential growth decisions, Northland road work tightens the commute, a free chamber concert moves into Meadowbrook Park, and Kansas City asks residents where the next bike connections should go.
Step Outside KC
At 1:54 this morning, Downtown Airport was 69°F under mostly cloudy skies. Humidity sat at 68 percent. An east wind moved at 6 mph. The pavement, for now, is the useful detail: dry.
Tuesday should climb near 82°F. South wind picks up through the day, with gusts around 21 mph possible. The daytime rain chance is small — about 10 percent after 5 PM — but the weather begins changing tonight. The National Weather Service puts the chance of showers and thunderstorms at 40 percent overnight, with a low near 69°F.
The wetter stretch is still ahead. Forecast discussion points to widespread accumulating rain from Tuesday night through Thursday night, with the heavier axes more likely north and west at first. Kansas City may sit between those heavier bands, but that is not the same thing as staying dry.
One distinction matters: as of the early-morning update, the active Flood Watch covers Doniphan County in Kansas and several counties in northwest Missouri. The core Kansas City metro is not listed in that watch.
Live release refresh at 6:36 AM CT: Kansas City was mostly cloudy and 67°F, with today’s forecast near 81°F and a low near 68°F. A thunderstorm is possible in the area late this afternoon.
Last Night in the Metro
Overland Park made two decisions Monday night that say more about the next decade than the next morning.
The City Council approved plans tied to Black & Veatch's new world headquarters near College Boulevard and Metcalf Avenue. KCTV reports the vote was unanimous and the new facility is expected to open in 2029. The city's September 28 agenda independently shows the Black & Veatch project among the council's development items.
The council also approved Playbook OP, its 10-year plan for parks, trails and pools. The plan moved forward; the argument over how to pay for it did not. Discussion of a proposed sales-tax funding mechanism was pushed to October 5.
One night, two versions of suburban growth: where people work, and where they spend the hours after work.
Roads, Ramps & Wrecks
Construction is the verified traffic story at this hour.
In the Northland, MoDOT continues overnight work on northbound I-29 between U.S. 69 and Mexico City Avenue. The work window is generally 7 PM to 6 AM. Tonight's package includes ramp closures at northbound I-29 to westbound Cookingham Drive and westbound I-435 to northbound I-29, weather permitting.
The ramp from northbound I-35 to southbound I-435 is scheduled to close from 9 AM to 3 PM for pavement repair.
Farther east, Route F between U.S. 50 at Lone Jack and Hudson Road near Oak Grove is under a flagging operation from 7 AM to 5 PM. It is not a full closure, but it can slow the drive.
At Bates City, the Route D bridge over I-70 remains scheduled to close roughly 8 AM to 3 PM for bridge repair.
RideKC still lists construction-related reroutes tied to the I-70 Improvement Project and the 18th Street Bridge. A separate September 28–30 conference alert affects multiple routes, but RideKC itself labels the effect “Unknown Effect.” No detour has been invented here.

From the Stands
The Chiefs are 3–0 after Sunday's 24–10 win over Miami.
The Royals ended the regular season Sunday with a 3–2 win over Cleveland. Vinnie Pasquantino hit two home runs, including the go-ahead shot.
The Current beat Denver Summit FC 4–1 on Saturday behind a Haley Hopkins hat trick. Kansas City sits at 12–9–5 with 41 points. Bay FC comes to CPKC Stadium Saturday, October 3, at 5:30 PM CT.
Sporting Kansas City beat Houston 2–0 Saturday, its first shutout of 2026. André Luiz had a goal and an assist; Calvin Harris scored the other. Sporting is at Seattle Thursday at 8:30 PM CT.
KC Lunch Line

KC Without a Cover
Kansas City Symphony at Meadowbrook Park — The Mobile Music Box brings a free outdoor chamber concert to Meadowbrook Park, 9101 Nall Avenue in Prairie Village, at 6 PM. Bring a chair or blanket. The concert is weather permitting.
Money Museum — The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City's museum at 1 Memorial Drive is free and open 9:30 AM–4 PM, with last entry at 3:30 PM. Adults 18 and older need a photo ID. Parking is free.
Linda Hall Library — The Alchemy of Knowledge exhibition is free at 5109 Cherry Street. Tuesday hours are 10 AM–5 PM, and on-site parking is free.

Around the Neighborhoods
Northland residents get a direct place at the planning table tonight. Kansas City's first Citywide Bikeways & Trails Plan public-engagement meeting runs from 5:30 to 7 PM at the Mid-Continent Public Library North Oak Branch, 8700 N. Oak Trafficway. All Kansas City residents are welcome.
In Lenexa, a dual-branded Marriott property has opened at City Center, 8710 Penrose Lane, with more than 250 rooms, extended-stay suites and street-level retail. The useful detail is not a hotel recommendation; it is another piece of Lenexa City Center moving from plan drawing to built street.
Arts & Culture
VISUAL VOICE: Moments of Abstraction is on view at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center, 3700 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The exhibition brings together Jeremy Bell, Kerry Grant, Clarissa Knighten, Jason Piggie, Michael Toombs and Jason Wilcox. The value is in the range: abstraction beside memory, adornment beside identity, private mark-making beside public history.
Tuesday hours are 10 AM–6 PM. Admission to the center is free; donations are welcome. The exhibition runs through November 7.
City Horoscope
Libra season is the frame. This is mood, not instruction.
Aries — Pick one lane and finish the merge. Taurus — Keep lunch simple. Save your energy for tonight. Gemini — Tell the shorter story first. Cancer — Handle the home logistics before the weather turns. Leo — Be five minutes early. It changes the entrance. Virgo — Fix the small thing that keeps catching on everything else. Libra — Stop balancing a decision you already made. Scorpio — Keep one thought off the group chat. Sagittarius — Take the unfamiliar street, not the reckless shortcut. Capricorn — Finish before you add. Aquarius — Ask the useful question in the public room. Pisces — Check the forecast, then wear the shoes you actually want.
Moon Note
Tonight's Moon is waning gibbous.
For Kansas City, the Moon sets at 10:39 AM and rises again at 8:30 PM. Timeanddate lists illumination at roughly 91.3 percent at lunar noon.
Western-astrology source material places the Moon in Taurus today. Keep the categories separate: the rise, set, phase and illumination are astronomical observations; the Taurus reading is astrology.

Editorial Discovery
Overland Park produced a useful reporting thread in less than 24 hours.
A new Black & Veatch headquarters moved forward. A 10-year parks, trails and pools plan moved forward. And on October 1, The Vine — a retail collective reported to include 30 local boutiques — is scheduled to open in Prairiefire's former Rock & Brews space.
They are not one story yet. They are three signals pointing toward one question: what is Overland Park trying to become as office life, public space and local retail are all being rebuilt at once?
That is worth field reporting, not a press-release rewrite. Before a standalone AVIA AREE feature, talk directly with the city, the businesses and the people actually using these spaces.
Top Five

3. VISUAL VOICE — Six artists, one room, free admission at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center.

5. A chamber concert on the lawn — Kansas City Symphony's Mobile Music Box is free at Meadowbrook Park at 6 PM, weather permitting.
