At 7:54 p.m., the official Downtown Airport observation still read 93°F under a clear sky. The heat index was 102°F. The sun had gone down, but the city had not cooled with it.

This is the 9 p.m. edition: the late streets, the next morning’s detours, the game beginning in Los Angeles, and the nearly moonless dark over Kansas City.

STEP OUTSIDE KC

LATEST OFFICIAL OBSERVATION — At 7:54 p.m., Kansas City Downtown Airport reported fair skies, 93°F, 52% humidity and a south wind at 8 mph. The heat index was 102°F.

EXTREME HEAT WARNING — The National Weather Service warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. Friday. Tonight is partly cloudy with a low around 82°F. Wednesday is forecast near 100°F with a heat index as high as 106°F and southwest gusts near 20 mph.

The useful move is not to mistake darkness for relief. Keep water beside the bed, move the first exposed errand early, and check on rooms that held the afternoon sun.

LAST NIGHT IN THE METRO

EAST 28TH STREET — The last verified public report available to this edition says Kansas City police opened a homicide investigation after a late-Monday shooting in the 5600 block of East 28th Street. Officers found 53-year-old Derrick D. McDonald wounded on the front steps of a home; he later died at a hospital. The morning report listed no announced suspect or motive.

ROADS, RAMPS & WRECKS

I-70 / CLEVELAND AVENUE — Cleveland Avenue remains closed over I-70 between 25th and 26th streets for bridge replacement through December. The signed vehicle detour uses 27th Street, Indiana Avenue and 23rd Street.

RIDEKC — Construction at 14th and Holmes continues to reroute Troost MAX, Route 23 and Blue Ridge service through Aug. 27. Troost MAX also remains rerouted around the U.S. 71/Bannister bridge project through Sept. 15. Routes 18 and 27 remain affected by the I-70 improvement project.

For Wednesday morning, open the live map before leaving rather than trusting the route you used last week.

FROM THE STANDS

ROYALS — Kansas City and Los Angeles began tonight’s game at 9:10 p.m. Central, with Michael Wacha matched against Blake Snell in Snell’s return from elbow surgery. This edition does not freeze an early score. The Dodgers won Monday’s opener 6–5 after Kansas City tied it in the seventh.

CHIEFS — Wednesday’s public training-camp practice begins at 9:15 a.m. in St. Joseph, with quarterback, running back and specialist autographs scheduled. The preseason opens Saturday at 3 p.m. against the Rams at Arrowhead Stadium.

SAUCED — 7 E. 19th St., Crossroads. The smash-burger shop has reopened across from its former walk-up in a larger room.

PRESS’D — 509 Delaware St., River Market. Juice, smoothies, coffee and café food; the current posted weekday hours run 7 a.m.–8 p.m.

Q39 LEE’S SUMMIT — 240 SW Oldham Parkway. The restaurant is in its first full week after opening Aug. 3; current Wednesday hours are 11 a.m.–9 p.m.
