Talk About The Weather — Thursday, September 24, 2026
A COOL START. A 74-DEGREE AFTERNOON.
THURSDAY · SEPTEMBER 24, 2026 · 4 A.M. CDT EDITION
Kansas City starts near 60°F and climbs to about 74°F. I-29 paving reshapes the Northland overnight, the Royals play a 1:10 day game, and Thursday evening runs from neighborhood gardens to museum galleries and outdoor music.
Before sunrise, the pavement is dark and the air has an edge to it again. Kansas City is around 60°F under a clouded sky. The afternoon should recover to roughly 74°F, with tonight near 57°F. The useful parts of Thursday are spread across exact places: I-29 after seven, Kauffman just after one, a community garden at five, and rooms full of art and music after work.
1) STEP OUTSIDE KC
Clouds hold the early hours. Mild air returns by afternoon.
Kansas City begins Thursday around 60°F under a mostly cloudy to overcast sky. The working forecast tops out near 74°F, with a low around 57°F tonight and little rain expected during the day. Sunrise is 7:08 a.m.; sunset is 7:12 p.m.

2) LAST NIGHT IN THE METRO
A downtown fire, a school-closure fight and a new South Kansas City clinic shaped Wednesday night.
Kansas City firefighters were called to the 1500 block of Grand Avenue at 8:13 p.m. Wednesday after smoke and fire were found in the basement of a two-story building. The fire was controlled by 8:37 p.m.; no one was inside and no injuries were reported. In Olathe, parents are preparing a petition effort called 6,100 Voices ahead of an October 1 school-board vote on six proposed school closures. In the Red Bridge neighborhood, Caravel Autism Health has opened a clinic with room for about 30 children; the organization says its metro expansion has eliminated wait times for services.

3) ROADS, RAMPS & WRECKS
The Northland road map gets busier after dark.
MoDOT is running evening and overnight paving on I-29 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Northbound lane closures continue between U.S. 69 and Mexico City Avenue; southbound I-29 between Barry Road and U.S. 69 joins the work tonight through September 27. Intermittent short-term ramp closures are possible, with mobile striping operations continuing in both directions. Around Kansas Speedway, race-week traffic changes remain in effect near Village West.

11) EDITORIAL DISCOVERY
The strongest Thursday stories sit where infrastructure meets ordinary life.
Three reporting threads are worth carrying beyond today’s listings. First: I-29’s repeated overnight paving is a commuter story best told across several nights, not one closure notice. Second: Pendleton Heights’ garden forum and Ivanhoe’s food distribution show neighborhood food infrastructure operating at a scale large outlets rarely document. Third: the American Discovery 250 Relay arrives from Olathe at the Trailside Center in South Kansas City today, offering a literal route through the metro for a photo essay about trails, civic space and how people cross the city without a car.

12) TOP FIVE
Five Thursday clocks worth keeping.
1:10 p.m. White Sox–Royals at Kauffman. 4 p.m. Ivanhoe Community Food Distribution begins. 5 p.m. Nelson-Atkins Night/Shift and Pendleton Heights’ garden forum begin. 6 p.m. Mobile Music Box at Wyandotte County Park. 7 p.m. Foster The People at Starlight and Linda Hall’s space-health program.

By evening, the same cool air that sat over the pavement before sunrise will be moving through ballpark exits, garden rows and the open seats at Starlight.
