A storm moved across the Northland after midnight. At MCI, thunder folded into rain and mist; under streetlights, the pavement carried a dull silver edge. By first light, leaves will be pressed to brick and water will still be moving along the curb.

STEP OUTSIDE KC

Kansas City begins near 72°F after overnight thunderstorm rain. MCI’s 11:22 PM special observation logged mist, three-mile visibility, a 500-foot ceiling and gusts to 21 knots. The National Weather Service keeps a Flood Watch in effect through 10 AM.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely mainly before 8 AM, then clouds should give way to more sun. The official high is near 85°F; tonight’s low is near 71°F, with another chance of storms after midnight.

Air quality can change by the hour after rain and summer heat. AirNow’s location dial did not return a stable Kansas City number early this morning, so use AirNow or Missouri DNR’s live Kansas City page before a long outdoor block, especially if you are sensitive to ozone.

LAST NIGHT IN THE METRO

The overnight weather is the first metro story: heavy rain, lightning and reduced visibility arrived while most of the city was asleep. The Flood Watch remains the confirmed morning hazard; check basements, low crossings and curb drains before assuming the water has cleared.

Across the state line, Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools is in its in-service week. Thursday is district convocation day and administrative offices are closed; the first students return August 12. That is useful family-calendar information, not an emergency closure.

ROADS, RAMPS & WRECKS

MoDOT begins intermittent short-term lane closures today on southbound I-49 south of Missouri Route 7 in Harrisonville. Pavement work continues into 6 AM Friday; the agency says the work is weather permitting.

RideKC’s construction detours remain in place around the Holmes Street bridge for Troost MAX, Route 23 and Route 29. A separate Troost MAX detour at U.S. 71 and Bannister is scheduled through September 15. The 510 K-10 Connector remains paused through August 23.

KC Streetcar lists no active service alert. At MCI, the latest official observation carried IFR conditions in thunderstorm rain; travelers should use the airport’s live flight board before leaving home rather than assume the schedule is moving normally.

FROM THE STANDS

Minnesota visits Kauffman Stadium tonight. MLB lists first pitch at 6:40 PM Central, with the game on ESPN. The weather belongs in the pregame plan; gates, parking and first pitch can all feel different after a wet morning.

The Kansas City Current is on the road next: Saturday at Houston, 7:45 PM Central, according to the club’s 2026 schedule. The next home match is August 22 against Seattle Reign.

KC LUNCH LINE

MILDRED’S — 1901 Wyandotte Street. Thursday hours run 7 AM–4 PM. The practical order remains a breakfast sandwich, coffee and something from the case.

BABA’S PANTRY — 1019 E. 63rd Street. The direct business site lists Thursday hours of 11 AM–7 PM for hummus, falafel, shawarma, kebabs and pantry plates.

THE WESTSIDE LOCAL — 1663 Summit Street. Lunch runs 11 AM–3 PM Tuesday through Saturday; the seasonal board is worth checking before you order.

Q39 LEE’S SUMMIT — 240 SW Oldham Parkway. The new location opened August 3 and serves lunch from 11 AM; Thursday closing is 9 PM.

KC WITHOUT A COVER

HOLMES PARK — Pop In at the Park runs 3:30–5:30 PM at 6901 Holmes Road. The free stop includes a book, children’s activities, summer-reading help and Kids Café meals while supplies last.

NELSON-ATKINS — General admission is free. Thursday museum hours are 10 AM–5 PM, and docent spotlight stations begin at 1 PM.

NERMAN MUSEUM — Admission is free and Thursday hours run 10 AM–8 PM. The Salon for Possible Futures and the summer exhibition slate are open.

KC STREETCAR — The ride is free from River Market through downtown to the Country Club Plaza. No active streetcar service alert was posted during the morning check.

AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOODS

Lee’s Summit has a newly open dining room: Q39’s fourth metro-area location began service Monday in Oldham Village, with an open kitchen, patio and full bar.

Vietnam Cafe says a second location is coming to 9500 W. 135th Street. The direct business site still describes it as coming soon, so there is no opening date to print yet.

On 39th Street, the roofline and old masonry keep doing quiet work. The block is useful context for the day’s small-business reporting: openings matter, but so do the buildings that hold a neighborhood’s memory.

ARTS & CULTURE

Herbie Hancock plays Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center tonight. The center lists the August 6 performance; ticket holders should confirm their entry time directly.
