Talk About The Weather — Sunday, September 27, 2026

Sep 27
5 min read

Before dawn, Kansas City is overcast, humid and damp. Showers stay in the forecast into early afternoon, while Sunday pulls traffic toward Kauffman Stadium, the Plaza, 18th & Vine, River Market and Liberty.

1 — STEP OUTSIDE KC

Rain has darkened the pavement before sunrise. At 2:54 a.m., Kansas City Downtown Airport reported 66°F, 93% humidity, northeast wind at 6 mph, a 64°F dew point and overcast skies.

The National Weather Service’s 2:16 a.m. forecast keeps a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11 a.m., with smaller shower chances around midday and early afternoon. High near 74°F. East-southeast wind around 6 mph. Precipitation chance 40 percent. Sunday night falls near 63°F under mostly cloudy skies.

Wet pavement first. Drier pockets later.

2 — LAST NIGHT IN THE METRO

No single post-midnight breaking story displaced the strongest verified late-Saturday developments. KC Heroes received a national Courage Award tied to its outreach to unhoused Kansas Citians and expansion work. At Kansas Speedway, an injured Army veteran received a wheelchair-accessible Toyota Sienna. In Clay County, a Richmond woman was sentenced to five years in a January high-speed fleeing case; no injuries were reported. These are verified September 26 developments, not mislabeled as post-midnight events.

3 — ROADS, RAMPS & WRECKS

Strutt with Your Mutt 5K reroutes RideKC Routes 50 and 63 from 6 a.m. until about noon. 18th & Vine festival detours continue through about midnight Monday, affecting Prospect MAX, Route 23 and Route 71. Plaza Art Fair keeps Route 35 on detour through about midnight Monday. RideKC also expects heavier traffic near Kauffman Stadium, City Market and Power & Light.

MoDOT carries I-29 southbound Clay County work Sunday night into Monday, roughly 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., weather permitting.

4 — FROM THE STANDS

  • Chiefs: at Miami, noon CT on CBS/KCTV5 locally; Kansas City enters 2–0.

  • Royals: Cleveland at Kauffman Stadium, 2:10 p.m.; parking gates open at 10 a.m. and stadium gates at 12:30 p.m.

  • KC Current: official recap confirms a 4–1 win over Denver Summit FC; Haley Hopkins scored a hat trick.

  • Sporting KC: official recap confirms a 2–0 win over Houston Dynamo Saturday night.

7 — AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOODS

The strongest neighborhood angle is the space between destinations. KC Streetcar Authority and EZ Pedicabs launched Partners in Transit, pairing the 6.5-mile Riverfront-to-UMKC streetcar route with pedicabs for first- and last-mile trips. The branded pedicab debuted during Plaza Art Fair weekend. On a Sunday when River Market, the Plaza and 18th & Vine are all pulling people into dense event zones, the last several blocks become part of the transportation story.

8 — ARTS & CULTURE

Plaza Art Fair closes today on the Country Club Plaza, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.; RideKC detours remain active. The 18th & Vine Arts Festival runs 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Soulful Sunday starts at 11, Food, Fitness & Flow runs 11:50 a.m.–12:30 p.m., and the Food Truck Showcase & Judging begins at 12:30. Brush Wars continues live art through the afternoon.

At the Nelson-Atkins, Free Weekend Fun: Mini to Monumental runs 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Today is also the listed closing date for Legendary Landscapes: Sublime Visions from China’s Song Dynasty.

9 — CITY HOROSCOPE

Entertainment, not instruction.

  • Aries — Pick the useful argument. Not every open tab deserves a closing statement.

  • Taurus — Spend for substance. One good lunch beats three purchases you did not mean to make.

  • Gemini — The inbox is not the city. Go look at something with an address.

  • Cancer — Home can be base camp without becoming the whole itinerary.

  • Leo — Take the front-row energy somewhere that has earned it.

  • Virgo — Put the errand beside the interesting thing. Efficiency should buy part of the day back.

  • Libra — You have enough options. Choose the cleaner line and stop editing the decision.

  • Scorpio — Keep one thought private long enough to learn whether you actually believe it.

  • Sagittarius — Go farther than the usual block, but not so far that logistics eat the afternoon.

  • Capricorn — Finish the small piece of business that can genuinely close today.

  • Aquarius — Connect two familiar places differently. The route may be more useful than the destination.

  • Pisces — Let the rain change the route, not cancel the whole map.

10 — MOON NOTE

Kansas City’s moon is about 99.4 percent illuminated, waning gibbous. Moonset is about 8:13 a.m.; moonrise about 7:25 p.m. Sunrise is about 7:10 a.m.; sunset about 7:07 p.m. Technically past full, visually still nearly round.

11 — EDITORIAL DISCOVERY

The Last Mile Is Becoming Part of the Kansas City Story. The Streetcar–EZ Pedicab partnership is stronger as a reporting lead than as an announcement. Today provides a live test case: River Market, 18th & Vine, the Plaza, downtown watch-party traffic and a long north–south streetcar spine.

Reporting question: What happens after the train stops? Proposed field piece: follow one trip from Riverfront to South Plaza and document transfers, sidewalks, waits, crossings, pedicab handoff, price, weather exposure and the final walk. Firsthand reporting is required before feature publication.

12 — TOP FIVE

  1. Keep the umbrella through lunch — NWS shower and thunder chances remain into the first half of Sunday, with smaller chances afterward.

  2. Chiefs at Miami — noon CT — CBS/KCTV5.

  3. City Market Farmers Market — 8 a.m.–3 p.m.

  4. Plaza Art Fair — 11 a.m.–5 p.m. — final day.

  5. 18th & Vine Arts Festival — 10 a.m.–5 p.m. — Soulful Sunday starts at 11; $10 day pass; children 13 and under free.
