Talk About The Weather — Sunday, September 20, 2026

CLOUDS FIRST. ARROWHEAD AFTER DARK.

The storm line moved on, but Kansas City kept the gray. The useful Sunday is in the timing: a late lunch, a dry layer in the car and the eastbound move before Arrowhead parking opens.

The late-morning National Weather Service readback showed cloudy conditions around 72°F, a high near 77°F and a low near 65°F, with only a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms. Weather sets the scene. Kansas City is the story.

1. STEP OUTSIDE KC

The air still looks like a storm story even after the strongest weather has moved on. Keep the rain shell close, but do not hand the whole Sunday to the clouds. Check radar once more before leaving for an outdoor event or the stadium.

2. LAST NIGHT IN THE METRO

Two clocks became visible at once: the Arabia Steamboat Museum's City Market lease ends November 13, and the free KCI-to-Johnson County shuttle ends today. One is about the identity of a district; the other is about whether a useful public experiment was built to last.

3. ROADS, RAMPS & WRECKS

Arrowhead parking opens at 3 p.m., the Ford Tailgate District at 3:30 and kickoff is 7:20. East of the metro, the I-70 Blue Springs-to-Odessa project still means narrowed lanes, traffic shifts, intermittent closures and a 55-mph work-zone limit. Leave before the brake lights become the plan.

4. FROM THE STANDS

Kansas City is 1-0; Indianapolis is 0-1. The Chiefs' Sunday-night home opener is also the Derrick Johnson Legends Game. Elsewhere, the Current are coming home from a 2-0 loss in San Diego, and Sporting's 3-0 lead turned into a 4-3 loss to Philadelphia. A sports city can hold confidence and evidence at the same time.

5. KC LUNCH LINE

Minsky's is pricing select large pepperoni pizzas at the medium price today. Beer Kitchen has its $15 Chicken Fried Sunday until sold out, Iron Horse Leawood is serving weekend brunch, and Callsign is giving hospitality workers a half-price Industry Day menu. The smart order is the one closest to where the rest of your Sunday is already going.

6. KC WITHOUT A COVER

The Scarritt Renaissance Fall Celebration runs 1–4 p.m. with music, games and family activities. City Market's farmers market is open 8 a.m.–3 p.m. The free list is good; the radar check is still part of the admission.

7. AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOODS

Zona Rosa sold for $63.3 million. The 768,000-square-foot Northland center is 67% leased, and its new owner describes a long, multiphase repositioning. The number matters. The next verb matters more: lease, rebuild, fill or wait.

8. ARTS & CULTURE

The Arabia's final autumn at City Market is not only a museum story. It is a story about what a historic district makes room for, what it asks to leave and what Kansas City chooses to carry forward when a familiar institution outgrows its address.

9. CITY HOROSCOPE — THE LAST TWO EVENINGS OF SUMMER

Aries: finish the errand you keep renaming later. Taurus: choose comfort that moves you forward. Gemini: give one conversation your full attention. Cancer: make room before the season asks. Leo: presence is louder than performance. Virgo: close one loop. Libra: balance is not delay; decide what stays. Scorpio: name what is ending. Sagittarius: take the longer route only if it shows you the city. Capricorn: make the useful plan finishable by Tuesday. Aquarius: keep the strange idea and give it a deadline. Pisces: notice what the wet air changes before you interpret it.

This is a place-based editorial column, not a claim about unverified planetary positions.

10. MOON NOTE

A waxing gibbous moon rises in the late afternoon, but the cloud deck may make it a game of openings. Astronomical autumn arrives Tuesday evening. The sky is doing what the city is doing: holding one season while the next one is already visible.

11. EDITORIAL DISCOVERY

The free KCI shuttle ends today after one-time funding, fuel and maintenance costs shaped the pilot's short life. The observant question is not only why it ends. It is what Kansas City learned about the riders who found it, the travelers who never heard about it and the airport trip we still have not made simple.

12. TODAY'S FIVE STORY DOORS

Start with Arrowhead's deadline map. Then read the Arabia's last City Market autumn, the airport shuttle's final day, Zona Rosa's new owner and the still-unsettled future of the former Bob Jones Shoes building. The fifth stays on the reporting desk until the underlying demolition and permit record is pulled.
