EDITORIAL DISCOVERY
THEN + NOW — CENTRAL LIBRARY. The downtown building opened as First National Bank in 1906 and became the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Library after renovation in 2004. The old vault structure—part of a later bank addition—still carries steel and reinforced-concrete walls behind a 35-ton steel door. The building changed jobs without erasing the machinery of its first one.
