Cool air at daybreak. VegFest takes Theis Park. The Current meets Bay FC. Saturday holds its doors open.

The rain is gone. The sidewalks keep the evidence.

Step Outside KC

Morning weather update, 7 a.m. CDT: the latest checked KMKC observation was 54°F and clear at 6:40 a.m. The National Weather Service forecast issued at 5:42 a.m. calls for sunshine today, a high near 73°F, and light wind becoming east-southeast around 6 mph. Tonight stays mostly clear, with a low near 54°F and calm wind. No rain is mentioned in the day or night forecast. No active NWS alerts covered the checked Kansas City point at 7 a.m. Take a light layer for the cool start and after sunset; the live homepage observation refreshes separately.

Last Night in the Metro

A recent development with consequences beyond the weekend: Olathe’s school board voted Thursday, October 1, to close Black Bob, Heritage, Scarborough, Tomahawk and Walnut Grove elementary schools and Indian Trail Middle School after the 2026–27 school year. Schools continue operating this year. The district plans boundary meetings from mid-October through mid-November; dates and locations are still to come. Some schools staying open will also be affected. The district’s goal is to establish boundaries by January 2027.

Roads, Ramps & Wrecks

RideKC Route 50 southbound detours for VegFest today, 8 a.m.–about 6 p.m., using Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard, Rockhill and MLK Boulevard; northbound stays on its regular route. Route 210 detours for the Current match from 3–about 11 p.m. Routes 50, 85 and 201 remain rerouted for KC Bier Co Oktoberfest through about noon Sunday, October 4. Allow extra travel time and use the linked route maps for stops. MoDOT has postponed/cancelled today’s planned 8 a.m.–4 p.m. eastbound U.S. 50 right-lane work from east of Jefferson to northbound MO 291 and the ramp to northbound 291/Hamblin. This notice does not cancel other nearby construction.

From the Stands

Sporting Kansas City lost 2–1 at Seattle on Thursday, October 1. André Luiz put Sporting ahead in the 44th minute; Sebastian Gomez equalized and Cristian Roldan scored the 90th-minute winner. Today, Kansas City Current hosts Bay FC at CPKC Stadium at 5:30 p.m. Central, its penultimate regular-season home match. Watch on ION or The Spot–Kansas City 38; radio coverage is on 90.9 The Bridge. The Current match has not started at this morning update.

KC Without a Cover

PNC Family Fun Day in the Power & Light District runs today, 11 a.m.–4 p.m., with free festival admission. Some activities are ticketed and food or vendor purchases cost extra. At the Nelson-Atkins, Bach to Nature is free drop-in art-making, 11 a.m.–3 p.m., with no registration: make rose-leaf rubbings and collages in the Bloch Building lobby, then explore Gallery 203. It is an art activity with recorded music, not a live Bach concert. Heartland Book Festival at Central Library is free, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; an admission ticket is required and mainstage seating is separately capacity-limited.

Around the Neighborhoods

Wendell Phillips has a new place to skate. KC Parks confirms Blues Park’s outdoor roller rink opened Wednesday, September 30, after five months of construction. The 16,000-square-foot rink at 2400 E. 20th Street comes with connecting sidewalks, a 36-space parking lot and a public restroom. This is its first Saturday after opening. The opening-day free lesson and loaned skates were September 30 activities; they are not promised for today.

Arts + Culture

The Heartland Book Festival fills Central Library, 14 W. 10th Street, today from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. with authors, workshops and art. A free entry ticket is required; mainstage seats are capacity-limited. The schedule includes Chico Sierra’s live canvas work, 10 a.m.–3 p.m., and Sass-a-Brass’s street parade, 11 a.m.–noon. At 8 p.m. in Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center, the Kansas City Symphony’s opening-weekend program pairs Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring with Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, played by Augustin Hadelich. The concert is ticketed; consult the Symphony’s live seating page rather than assuming availability.

City Horoscope

ARIES — Take the earlier route. Saturday rewards the person who arrives before the parking problem. TAURUS — Breakfast first, then one place where the chairs are not the point. GEMINI — Choose three stops, not thirteen. Leave room for the street between them. CANCER — The sunny forecast is permission to stay out longer, not to overbook the day. LEO — Matchday belongs to the crowd. Let your voice join without swallowing the room. VIRGO — Check the detour, the ticket and the closing time. Then stop checking. LIBRA — Art in the morning, soccer by evening. Balance can have a transit plan. SCORPIO — The story beneath the event listing is who set up before sunrise. SAGITTARIUS — Cross town for something specific, then let one unscheduled block survive. CAPRICORN — Finish the practical errand before noon. The afternoon has other work. AQUARIUS — Ask the vendor how it was made. The answer is part of what you bought. PISCES — The pavement has dried, but it still remembers Thursday. So do you.
