What the Land Keeps

A mild Monday: a high near 70, I-70 detours, curbside brush, museum landscapes and a waxing moon.

Weekend Metro Report

The Chiefs beat the Chargers 22–6 Sunday at Arrowhead. A cattle-truck crash before 3 AM Sunday killed dozens of cattle; AP reported that police believed all surviving animals were accounted for by that afternoon. Separately, two people died near 27th and Jackson at about 1:55 AM Saturday, October 17, according to KCTV5’s report citing Kansas City police.

Arts & Culture

American Prospects turns landscape into evidence of settlement, work and change. Tonight, Kyle Hume is at recordBar; check your ticket and the venue for arrival time and availability.

City Horoscope

An editorial forecast for attention, not fate.

Aries: Start with the task that clears the road.

Taurus: Give a good lunch ten unhurried minutes.

Gemini: Verify the time before building the day around it.

Cancer: Make home easier for tonight’s arrival.

Leo: Let yesterday’s roar become quiet confidence.

Virgo: The live map outranks the familiar shortcut.

Libra: Balance one public room with one private pause.

Scorpio: An incomplete report is not a conclusion.

Sagittarius: Take the long view; the landscape tells a story.

Capricorn: Put the brush out exactly as the city asks.

Aquarius: Notice the system behind an ordinary service.

Pisces: Look up after work; the moon has been building.

Moon Note

The waxing gibbous moon rises about 3:21 PM, crosses the meridian at 8:23 PM and sets Tuesday at 1:32 AM CDT. Illumination reaches about 63% at lunar noon. Clouds may obscure the view.

What the Land Keeps

A roadwork detour, a brush pile and an 80-picture photography exhibition all ask the same Kansas City question: what does the land remember after we have moved through it?

Today’s city leaves records in plain sight. The I-70 project redirects buses and cars, showing where movement has been prioritized. South Kansas City’s leaf-and-brush pickup turns private yardwork into a public system. At the Nelson-Atkins, American Prospects holds nearly two centuries of landscape photography up to the present and asks viewers to see terrain not as empty background, but as witness.

The useful Monday practice is small: read the official sign, place the branches correctly, take the long view in the gallery, and look up when the waxing moon rises. Weather sets the scene. Kansas City is the story.

Top Five

• Check live road maps. • Follow South KC’s collection schedule. • Take a proper lunch. • See American Prospects free. • Find the moon after 3:21 PM.
