A brown leather sofa, blue upholstered chairs and botanical-print cushions make a good case for staying a while. Outside, pumpkins and cornstalks dress the red-brick storefront for fall. At 318 Armour Road, Latte Life is bringing a new place to pause over coffee to North Kansas City.

The café celebrates its opening October 12, with coffee, light fare and a purpose that reaches into the working lives of its neighbors. Powered by Life Unlimited, Latte Life creates inclusive employment and hands-on workforce training opportunities for adults with disabilities.

Coffee with a purpose

That work takes place in the everyday setting of a neighborhood café. Customers order drinks, friends meet across a table, and participants gain experience in the skills a service business depends on. Latte Life’s academy is designed as a path toward employment in the wider community.

Life Unlimited’s broader employment services help people identify their interests and strengths, prepare for interviews, develop job skills and connect with employers. Support can include transportation, workplace accommodations and on-the-job coaching, shaped around each person’s needs. The emphasis is on finding work that fits the individual.

The nonprofit also provides community-living services, including support in homes people own or rent and in agency-owned homes. Depending on the person, assistance may include cooking, shopping, transportation and other daily activities. These housing and living supports are part of Life Unlimited’s wider work; the café’s specific mission centers on employment and training.

Make it a neighborhood habit

For the neighborhood, the invitation is refreshingly straightforward: stop in for coffee. Bring the friend you’ve been meaning to catch up with. Take a seat among the plants and patterned cushions. Give a new local business a place in your week.

Opening-day café hours are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the North Kansas City Business Council. Its current announcement confirms coffee and light fare; check Latte Life’s updates for the latest offerings before you go.

Supporting inclusive employment can begin with an ordinary neighborhood habit. Try the coffee, get to know the place and give yourself a reason to come back.
