The family musical Lilly and the Pirates at Crown Center (through May 3);
A racing-themed LEGO® build event (Apr 16–May 25 at LEGOLAND Discovery Center);
A free outdoor Symphony quartet (Apr 29 at 6:30pm, Sar-Ko-Trails Park in Lenexa);
Prime Social’s Kentucky Derby Day party (May 2); and the 40th Brookside Art Annual (May 1–3).

Weather
Early week will be mostly cloudy with a few sunny breaks. By midweek expect more sun and mild temperatures (highs in the 70s°F). Evenings remain cool (around 50s°F) – still jacket weather. Overall it’s great walking weather downtown, in Crossroads or West Bottoms.

What People Are Talking About
Vine District revitalization: Kansas City’s “Revive the Vine” program is moving forward on major projects. Parade Park Homes is being rebuilt into 479 new affordable townhomes. Nearby, crews are finishing the Boone Theater and 18th/Lydia parking garage (the 18th Street Pedestrian Mall is on track to open by June). These efforts show KC’s push to redevelop historic neighborhoods with housing and entertainment.
Royals stadium at Crown Center: In mid-April the Royals revealed plans for a new ballpark at Crown Center. That 1970s-era complex (Hallmark HQ, shopping, etc.) is on the National Register. Experts note such projects often use historic tax credits to preserve old buildings (e.g. future Aladdin lofts, ABC Warehouse apartments). Royals news has sparked debate on balancing big development with KC’s local character.
Local biz pop-ups: The City’s new “Open Doors!” grant program is funding pop-up shops in vacant storefronts ahead of the World Cup. It pairs 18 local entrepreneurs with empty spaces (on 18th & Vine, at Union Station, the Crossroads, etc.) by covering up to $10K in build-out and rent costs. Kansas City has invested about $1.6M (plus $100K from Airbnb) in this initiative to boost independent, neighborhood businesses.
Coffee & Calm Spaces
Dark Horse Coffee – 1702 SW Route 7, Blue Springs (Mon–Fri 6 am–2 pm; Sat 7 am–3 pm). New local café serving Onyx Coffee Roasters beans. Try their seasonal latte or cherry cold foam.
Oddly Correct (Cafe on Troost) – 4141 Troost Ave, KCMO (Mon–Fri 7 am–5 pm; Sat–Sun 8 am–3 pm). Independent roastery and café with specialty espresso drinks, breakfast sandwiches, and a breezy patio. Often features free latte upgrades on weekdays.
Broadway Café & Roasting Co. – 4106 Broadway Blvd (Westport) (Mon–Wed, Fri–Sun 7 am–8 pm; Thu 10 am–8 pm). Historic Westport diner serving Boulevard coffee and homemade pastries. Regularly offers happy-hour drink specials.
Filling Station (Midtown) – 2980 McGee Trafficway (Union Hill; Mon–Fri 6:30 am–6 pm; Sat–Sun 7 am–6 pm). Neighborhood café known for craft coffee and bagels. Sign up for their email list for occasional discounts on drinks and sandwiches.
Business & Networking
InvestMidwest Conference – Apr 21–22, Kauffman Conference Center. Midwest’s top startup-investor conference (pitches, panels, mentors). Tickets and session info at investmidwest.org.
TipClub KC Networking – Wed, Apr 29 (6:00pm; venue TBA). Casual meet-up of local entrepreneurs and corporate pros (RSVP via TipClub’s Eventbrite page).
SmallBiz & Tech Meetups: The EOS Entrepreneur Conference is Apr 23–24 (Kauffman Center, free). The KC Tech Council and WNT (Women’s Networking Team) also host frequent mixers and lunch-and-learns (check Meetup.com or their websites).
Sports
Chiefs: Offseason – no games this week. Fans catch up on draft coverage and look ahead to training camp. Chicken N Pickle (North KC) often hosts NFL watch nights, and popular sports bars (e.g. Kansas City Bier Company) hold Chiefs watch parties once preseason starts.
Royals: Spring training is over and regular season is underway. Kansas City hosts Seattle (May 4–6) after this week – check royals.com for tickets. On game nights, local bars (like Weston Brewing, Boulevard Brewery Bier Hall) do Royals watch parties.
Areas to Watch
West Bottoms: The vintage-shopping district remains a weekend hotspot.
Dozens of antique and resale shops fill old warehouses; First Friday events (and the recent “Badda Bing, Badda Boom” festival) draw collectors from all ages.
New activity is arriving: Molzer Development just acquired the historic 1905 Advanced Thresher building, hinting at more restaurants/retail.
The District Harvest Market food hall is also planning a new Bottoms location soon. In short, the Bottoms continues evolving into a consistent destination (antiques, first Fridays, plus art studios and coffee shops).
