AUGUST MOON NOTE: THE MONTH TURNS TWICE
August arrives already thinning. The moon over Kansas City is waning, the evenings are still hot, and the month has the feeling of a room being cleared before anyone knows who is coming next.
This is a hinge month: release, darkness, reconstruction, illumination. The sky closes one door on August 12 and opens another beneath the same new moon. By the end of the month, the full moon is partially eclipsed. What has been vague becomes visible by subtraction.

The August 12 total solar eclipse is not total over Kansas City, but the new-moon reset still belongs to the month. The Perseid meteor shower peaks that night into August 13 under unusually dark skies. On August 27–28, Kansas City can see a partial lunar eclipse.
